Montecillo’s roots are in Fuenmayor, one of the towns with the longest grapegrowing traditions in Rioja Alta. Surrounded by vines and close to the waters of a serene and benevolent river, the majestic Ebro, Fuenmayor’s surroundings are set amongst flat topped hills, and in the distance, the distinctive rocky mass of the Cantabrian Mountains. Montecillo is the third oldest winery in Rioja and therefore has a wealth of experience in winemaking and bottle and barrel ageing. As a result this wine is vibrant, with a thoroughly fresh nose full of ripe red fruits with hints of warm patisserie and a subtle touch of anise and the oak is sublimely judged. It is lively on the palate too with masses of juicy dark fruit character, polished tannins and a cracking finish with nods to coconut, creamy toffee and vanilla pod to complement the generous fruit. Montecillo is the third oldest winery in Rioja but this wine comes from bush vines in the Rueda region. This Verdejo is expressive with great aromatic intensity and clear varietal personality, where aromas of freshly cut grass, apricot and lime stand out. Once aerated, a mineral note appears. On the palate, the fruit notes that appear on the nose return, in a wine that is enveloping, sweetly appetising and elegant. Is fresh has noticeable acidity with a glycerine texture and a deliciously long finish. I've tasted many Verdejo's but none a great as this. Drink alone with your parter or enjoy with pasta or rice dishes. 13% and Vegan.
