Bodega Luigi Bosca Gala 1 2017

Coming from the Luján de Cuyo region of Mendoza where all of the grapes are hand-picked, the viticultural team apply biodynamic principles across the estate, though they do not hold certification. This Gala 1 is Malbec dominated, supported by Tannat and Petit Verdot. The nose is attractive and elegant with black olives, liquorice and tobacco. It's compact, rounded and strong on the palate, with ripe tannins, showing notes of toffee and toasted coffee beans as a result of its oak ageing. A concentrated, modern, full-bodied and highly persistent wine which is harmonious and complex with a long finish. This is an outstanding blend and one of my favourites which can be enjoyed with many foods including meat empanadas, lamb confit and potato pie. Enjoy now or in the next few years. 14.5% and Vegan.

Owned by Louis Fabre, this excellent estate near Beziers, in the southern Languedoc, benefits from the Mediterranean climate. Recent investment, cold fermentation and good vinification produce aromatic and spicy wines with remarkable finesse. Produced from organic fruit grown at the small estate, Grande Courtade (meaning `large sunny courtyard`), this is a delicate salmon pink rosé made by the `saignée` method of bleeding the fermenting juice from the skins, to preserve the fruit flavours and aromas. It is dry with a perfumed bouquet of vibrant summer fruits on the palate and a refreshing and crisp acidity. Named in tribute to the Ladybirds that combat the presence of the mealybug and protect the vines, they used to be bought and released by the winery, but now after 14 years, the cycle goes naturally and there are enough around. These little creatures are a remarkable deterrent and avoid the need for the use of pesticides to eradicate pests. This wine is a Bordeaux influenced blend, and has a complex nose with hints of spice, chocolate and mocha. Good structure with plum and mineral complexity and a lingering finish. Showing graceful elegance, this wine over delivers on quality and showcases this estate as one of the leading lights in South Africa. Best with roast beef, meatballs in tomato sauce and pasta with bolognese sauce. 14% and Organic, Vegan.

This Rioja Baja based winery started in the 1950s and today is run by six families and operates from a modern cellar in the town of Alfaro. The wine sees 50/50 American and French oak for 18 months before bottling which results in an Intense dark ruby colour while ripe red and black cherry notes come through on the palate with hints of vanilla and cocoa. Velvety tannins give a rich mouthfeel and a long lasting finish that goes well with grilled red meat, game dishes or hard cheese, such as Manchego or aged Parmesan. 13.5% and Sustainable methods.

It is rare in Rioja for producers to own all their own vines, let alone to farm them organically. Certified since 1995, this estate is run by brothers Luís, Ramón and Andrés. Having worked so hard on growing the fruit, there is a clear reluctance to use too much oak on the barrel-aged wines - a breath of fresh air in Rioja. The Qvinto Arrio Crianza is aged for at least 12 months in American and French oak barrels. Its ripe red fruity aromas combine perfectly with hints of vanilla, cinnamon and sweet spices. The palate is intense ripe black cherry, raspberry and toasted coconut which leads to a persistent finish. This is the perfect wine for a grilled steak. 14% and Organic, Vegan.
